Legend has it that “Athol” means “peaceful place” and one visit to this hidden gem of tranquility will prove that this town, with a population of just under 800, lives up to its name. Just north of Hayden between Coeur D’Alene and Sandpoint off Highway 95 in Kootenai County, Athol is home to the Country Boy Café, which is known for the “best chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy in the Idaho Panhandle.”
Mature evergreens and rolling hills surround extra-large plots and custom built homes providing residents with seclusion without the feeling of being isolated. Close to Farragut State Park and Coeur D’Alene National Forest, both of which offer endless recreational activities, Athol is becoming a popular destination for retirees or anyone looking to get away from urban turmoil. Not much has changed in Athol and the town brings you back to the frontier days when cattle roamed the prairie and the rattle of freight trains lulled you to sleep.
