At first glance, the city of Coeur d’Alene doesn’t look real. Sitting on the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, surrounded by pine-forested mountains is Coeur d’Alene, the Lake City, the “sparkling jewel of the Gem State.” Given its name by French Iroquois Indians in the 1790s, Coeur d’Alene means “heart of awl” perhaps referring to the city’s lucrative trading. Coeur d’Alene is Idaho’s sixth largest city and has become an international vacation destination as well as a haven for the rich and famous. Real estate is highly sought after in Coeur d’Alene but there is a diverse array of options to suit any lifestyle or budget.
The city is a growing metropolis filled with trendy and sophisticated stores, galleries, jewelry stores, fine dining and five-star accommodations. The Coeur d’Alene Resort boasts the world’s longest floating boardwalk and was chosen by Good Morning America for a remote broadcast in 2007. The city hosts year-round festivals, street fairs, art shows and parades as well as top-rated shows and charity events.
You could spend a whole day strolling through town but the main attraction is the lake. Not many cities have a beach in the middle of town. Coeur d’Alene City Park has a public swimming, boat launches, picnic areas, and docks. Tubbs Hill boasts a two-mile trail where the “street meets the beach.” For a more challenging workout, there are miles of hiking and biking trails in natural preserves, professional golf courses, and tennis courts.
A city of contrasts, Coeur d’Alene has the best of both worlds: an upscale sophisticated town with five-star amenities in a rugged, picturesque setting. It’s easy to see why Coeur d’Alene is known as “the playground of the Pacific Northwest.”
